DOJ Warns VA Governor After Gun Bill Signing

Justice officials say that recent bills signed by Governor Spanberger infringe on the Second Amendment.

Department of Justice (DOJ) Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon wrote a letter to Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, warning that federal action would be taken if any bills violating the Second Amendment were enforced in Virginia.

In her letter to Governor Spanberger, Assistant Attorney General Dhillon wrote, “The Civil Rights Division will commence litigation in the event the Commonwealth of Virginia enacts certain bills that unconstitutionally limit law-abiding Americans’ individual right to bear arms. President Trump issued Executive Order 14206 making clear that this Administration will take affirmative steps to ensure that Second Amendment rights ‘must not be infringed.'”

The bill in question, SB 749/HB 217, would restrict the usage and ownership of “assault firearms,” an overly broad definition that includes semiautomatic rifles and pistols that can hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition. This bill was one of many that Governor Spanberger signed, addressing various issues such as firearm manufacturers’ liability, ghost guns, and partners of those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Governor Spanberger, state legislators and law enforcement as they consider the DOJ warning regarding the gun control bills that were recently signed.
  • For Assistant Attorney General Dhillon to have wisdom as she reviews Virginia officials’ measures and the firearm protections of the Second Amendment.
